While there has been no conclusive evidence that dental amalgam has any adverse health effects on patients, the regulation considers the full life cycle of mercury, from mining to waste disposal. Mining mercury is harmful to miners exposed to the vapours, and upon discard, the mercury also harms the environment.
As a result of this ban, it will be prohibited to export dental amalgam from the EU from 1st January 2025 – drastically affecting UK supply chains.
As a result of reduced manufacturing, amalgam will become more expensive, nullifying one of the key benefits of the treatment today.
