FAQs

Dental infection control refers to the procedures, products, and working practices used to help reduce the risk of cross-infection and maintain a safe clinical environment. It can include hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE), surface cleaning and disinfection, instrument decontamination and sterilisation, dental unit waterline management, and the safe use of clinical barriers.
The infection control products required will depend on the procedures carried out and your practice protocols. Common dental infection control supplies include disinfectants and cleaning products, PPE, sterilisation pouches, instrument cleaning and decontamination products, surface barriers, testing products, and dental waterline treatment solutions.
Cleaning removes contamination and debris from a surface or instrument. Disinfection is used to reduce or eliminate many harmful microorganisms using an appropriate disinfectant. Sterilisation is a validated process used for reusable instruments where required. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable infection prevention and decontamination guidance.
Reusable dental instruments should be processed using an appropriate, validated decontamination procedure. In England, HTM 01-05 provides guidance for the decontamination of reusable instruments in primary care dental practices. Practices should follow current national guidance alongside the instructions provided by equipment and product manufacturers.
Depending on the procedure and assessed risk, dental PPE can include medical gloves, masks or respirators, protective eyewear, face protection, and protective clothing. PPE should form part of a wider infection prevention and control approach, and should be selected and used according to current guidance and the requirements of the clinical task.
Dental unit waterlines can be susceptible to microbial contamination and biofilm formation. An appropriate dental waterline maintenance and decontamination programme can help practices manage water quality. The products and procedures used should be compatible with the dental unit and follow the equipment and treatment manufacturer's instructions.
Henry Schein offer a broad range of dental infection control products and supplies, including solutions for cleaning and disinfection, PPE, instrument decontamination and sterilisation, surface protection, testing, and dental waterline care.
